| Volunteers needed for 2013 ClarinetFest®!
In exchange for a minimum of 20 hours volunteering at the 2013 ClarinetFest®, July 24-28, you can receive free registration (and if you've already registered, your registration fee will be refunded.) A limited number of volunteers spots are open. If you are interested in volunteering at the 2013 ClarinetFest®, please email execdirector@clarinet.org by Wednesday, July 3rd. Please include the following information:
- Your name, address, email address and mobile phone number (will your mobile phone have service in Italy?)
- Have you already registered for the 2013 ClarinetFest®?
- Your arrival and departure dates in Assisi
- Where will you be staying in Assisi?
- Are you age 18 or older?
- Have you volunteered at a previous ClarinetFest®? If so, what did you do?

In the News

The Carl Nielsen 5th International Clarinet Competition was held in Odense, Denmark May 30-June 9 and included 42 clarinetists from 20 countries. First prize was awarded to Sergey Eletskiy from Russia. Other prizewinners included Mathias Kjøller (Denmark), Innhyuck Cho (Republic of Korea), and Pierre Génisson (France). On Wednesday, April 10 the 16th Annual Midwest ClariFest was held on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Students of all ages, teachers and professional clarinetists from around the state and region enjoyed a full day of activities that included performances, lectures, master classes and a mass clarinet choir. Dr. Suzanne Tirk from the University of Oklahoma was the featured guest artist. Next year's Midwest ClariFest is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2014 and will feature guest artsts Robert Walzel and Gary Whitman.

The South Florida Clarinet Fest was held April 12-13 on the campus of the University of South Florida in Tampa. The festival included several performances, master classes and industry exhibitors. Participating artists included: Calvin Falwell, José García Taborda, José Gómez, Stacey McColley, Phillip O. Paglialonga, and Laura Stephenson.
The Fifth Annual Clarimania was held April 23-27 in Wroclaw, Poland, and organized by Jan Jakub Bokun. This five-day festival brought together clarinetists from nine different countries for recitals, master classes and many pedagogical forums. Featured artists included Jean-Michel Bertelli, Shirley Brill, Arte Combo, Florent Héau, Philippe Pachet, Timothy Phillips, Jeremy Reynolds, Fernando Silveira, and Roman Widaszek. The Claremont Clarinet Festival was held at Pomona College June 16-22. The event included seven days of master classes, performances and private coachings. This year the event featured Sqwonk artists Jon Russell and Jeff Anderle. Click here for more information.

Fifth Annual Clarinetopia Seminar Participants |
Thirty-four clarinetists, two pianists, one violinist and one flutist convened at Michigan State University June 5 - 9 for the Fifth Annual Clarinetopia Seminar. Charles Neidich, Ayako Oshima, Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, Guy Yehuda, Theodore Oien, Michael Webster and Leone Buyse performed faculty recitals and gave master classes for students who hailed from as far away as California, Manitoba, New York, and Georgia. Brothers Anthony and Demarre McGill appeared on the Steve Harvey Show on May 15 to talk about their careers and to thank their parents for their support. Anthony McGill currently serves as the Principal Clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York City and his brother Demarre McGill was recently named Principal Flute of the Dallas Symphony.

Great Falls Clarinet Day 2012 Participants |
The Great Falls Clarinet Day was held on May 17-18 at Great Falls High School in Montana. The event was organized by Useon Choi, principal clarinet of the Great Falls Symphony Orchestra and supported by local clarinetists and ensembles such as the 'Lectirc City Licorice Sticks. Guest artists J. David Harris, Maxine Ramey, Christopher Kirkpatrick and Geon-Joo Kim presented master classes and lectures. The event also featured a mass clarinet choir performance for all playing levels from middle school students to amateur adult clarinetists. Charles Neidich Master Class at University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium |
The 36th Annual University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium took place in Norman, OK, June 13-15, 2013 and was a tribute to David Etheridge, former Professor of Clarinet at the University of Oklahoma and founder of the OU Clarinet Symposium. A Tribute Recital featuring former students, friends, colleagues, and family members took place on Friday afternoon followed by a dinner reception hosted by Buffet Crampon. In honor of David Etheridge, the Buffet Group announced a yearly full tuition and fee scholarship for an outstanding OU clarinet music major. This year's winner was music education major, Justin Pearse. In addition to concerts and masterclasses featuring guest artists David Shifrin, Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, Gregory Raden, and Charles Neidich, there were numerous exhibits, recitals, lectures, a Young Artist Competition, and a Symposium Clarinet Choir. Coming Events
The Accademia Italiana del Clarinetto, in collaboration with the city of Assisi, will host ClarinetFest 2013 July 24-28 in the historic city of Assisi, in the Umbria region of Italy. The premiere event of its kind, ClarinetFest includes performers from around the world, lectures and demonstrations on a wide variety of topics, industry exhibits and much, much more! The Belgian Clarinet Academy will take place in Ostend, Belgium July 10-16. The Academy will feature Julia Heinen, Robert Spring and Eddy VanOosthuyse. Click here for more information.
The Buffet Summer Academy will happen July 15-20 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. The curriculum will include daily private lessons, master classes, and lectures. This year's artist faculty will include: Ixi Chen, Stanley Drucker, Daniel Gilbert, Jonathan Gunn, and André Moisan. Click here for more information.
The 7th Annual Summer Clarinet Workshop in Domazlice (Czech Republic) will be held August 17-25. The workshop will include concerts and lectors by Ludmila Peterkova (Czech Republic) and Joe Eller (U.S.A.), chamber music performances at the castle and on Lake Babylon, as well as student performances. The workshop will include programs for students under fifteen as well as for older students and adults. Click here for more information.

Appointments
- Boris Allakhverdyan won the audition for Principal Clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. [Bio]
- Burt Hara won the position of Associate Principal Clarinet with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.[Bio]
- Derek Bermel was appointed Artistic Director of the American Composer's Orchestra. [Bio]
- Phillip O. Paglialonga was appointed to the faculty of Virginia Tech. [Bio]
- Jeremy Reynolds won the audition for Assistant Principal Clarinet of the Colorado Springs Philharmonic.[Bio]
- Erin Svoboda accepted the Associate Principal/Second/E-flat Clarinet position with the Utah Symphony and will start this September.
- Jason Shafer was won the audition for Principal Clarinet of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra.
- Gabi Campos Zamora won the audition for Principal Clarinet of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.

Passages

Walter Boeykens (1938-2013) acclaimed former member of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Belgian Radio and Television from 1964 to 1985, and Director of the Boeykens Clarinet Choir died on April 23. Click here for more information.
Keith Wilson (1916-2013) Professor Emeritus of Clarinet at Yale School of Music, died peacefully on Sunday, June 2. He was 96. Keith Wilson was appointed to the Yale School of Music faculty in 1946 and taught there for over 40 years before retiring in 1987 at the age of 70.
Northwestern University invites colleagues, friends and former students to Alice Millar Chapel (1870 Sheridan Rd, Evanston, IL 60208) on Monday, September 30, 2013 to honor the life and career of clarinetist Clark Brody who died in November of last year. The service will begin at 12:00pm and conclude with a reception in Parks Hall directly adjacent to the Millar Chapel. The service is open to the public.
